A visit from Roaring Acres Alpaca Farm

On Tuesday, May 31st, McAlister Intermediate School welcomed Roaring Acres Alpaca Farms to kick-off our One Book, One Community reading of Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech.  Students were greeted by four (4) alpacas and three (3) bottle fed lambs. Farmers Alison and Lexi Mnich were joined by farmer James and took children on an exploration of animal care and life on a farm. During the assembly, Alison explained the daily life of caring for animals, especially those who are bottle fed, like the three lambs and the main character in our book - Winslow.  Students also learned about the differences between alpacas and llamas, the veterinary care required for animals, and all about general farm chores.  Our guests even displayed several of the items available in their boutique made from alpaca fur.  As the pictures below demonstrated, students had a blast.

As a part of the fun activities associated with our One Book, One Community read, students are invited to visit Roaring Acres Alpaca farm to hand feed the animals and learn even more.  We hope children take advantage of this local gem and send us pictures to decorate our bulletin boards.
